Chapter 2 - ACTIVATION

It wasn't supposed to look at her like that.

Not this early.

Not before it was even fully stable.

And definitely not... like it already knew her.

The chamber pulsed with a low, steady glow, light flickering across Aarya's face as she stood in front of it, too close, unmoving, completely unaware of how different she looked right now.

Rivan noticed immediately.

The distance.

The stillness.

The way the figure inside the chamber wasn't scanning.....wasn't learning....wasn't behaving like a system at all.

It was focused. On her.

"That's not observation behavior," he said, his voice quieter than it should have been. "That's... fixation."

"Say it properly," Aarya murmured.

Rivan exhaled.

"...It's choosing where to look."  And it had chosen her.

"You're too close," he said. "to the chamber," he felt a little jealous of that robot which was the fvcking project!

Aarya didn't move.

"Since when does that bother you?" she asked softly.

That wasn't a casual question.

And they both knew it.

Rivan held her gaze for a second too long.

Because the answer wasn't simple. It wasn't professional.

"It's reacting to you," he said finally.

"And?" she asked. The word landed between them: slow, deliberate.

Rivan's jaw tightened. "And we don't know why."

Aarya turned back toward the chamber; Closer again. Always closer.

"Maybe we do," she said quietly. Her hand lifted, hovering near the chamber.

Rivan noticed the smallest details now.....and somewhere he was getting a little bit of jealousy inside him.....

the way her fingers trembled slightly before settling, the way her breathing had changed; slower... deeper. Like something in the room had shifted around her.

Inside the chamber, there was a slight movement.....clearly intentional this time. The figure adjusted. Just enough. Her breath caught....it was still looking at her ----- Not scanning, Not analyzing. Looking and maybe deciding...

Aarya's fingertips finally touched the glass; Soft. Barely there.

And the system responded. A pulse ran through the chamber, stronger this time.

Rivan froze. "...Did you see that?"

"I felt it," she whispered.

That wasn't possible. And yet, the way she said it made it sound real.

Inside -

The figure shifted again. Mirroring, not perfectly, not fully, but enough to make it undeniable.

Ritvan stepped forward immediately. "That's enough." But Aarya didn't move.

Her eyes were fixed.

Her lips slightly parted.

Her breathing is slower now, heavier. Like she was waiting for something she couldn't explain.

"It's responding," she said softly.

"To you," he snapped.

"And that bothers you." This time, she turned.

Their faces were closer than before. Closer than they had any reason to be.

Rivan felt it; that shift.

That pull.

Not from the chamber.

From her.

"...It shouldn't," he said. But it did. Because the way she was looking at the chamber ......the way her attention had shifted; It didn't feel like she was studying the system anymore. It felt like she was drawn to it.

And he hated that.

Rivan (unspoken):

I was going to tell her I want her.
Not professionally. Not logically.
Just... her.
But now this thing is watching her like it already knows that.
Like it's already decided something.

I should've said it before we turned this thing on.

Before it started looking at her like that.
Before she started looking back.
She doesn't even realize it...
But something's already shifting.
And I don't like what it's taking from me.

She doesn't even look at me like that.

"Aarya," he said again, quieter now. Something in his voice made her pause.

She turned towards him- slowly....
And for a moment, the world narrowed.

No chamber, no system, no experment. Just the space between them.

"...Why are you looking at me like that?" she asked....Rivan didn't answer immediately.

"...Because this is going too far," he said. But even he knew that wasn't the whole reason.

Aarya studied him. She really did!

And something flickered in her expression; confusion...awareness...something she hadn't planned to feel.

Then slowly, she stepped back. Her hand left the glass, and the connection broke...

Inside the figure stilled instantly, and the pulse softened.Like something had just been taken away. Silence filled the lab again. But it wasn't empty. It was heavy.

Charged.

Because now, they both knew. This wasn't just a system reacting. And it wasn't just an experiment anymore.

"That wasn't in the design." Aarya exhaled slowly. "No," Rivan said quietly.

Neither of them looked at the other. Because something had shifted. Not just inside the chamber. Between them.

And neither of them was ready to admit........What exactly it was.

"...Why did it stop?" she asked quietly. Rivan didn't answer.

She turned slowly towards him. Now she was looking at him. Really looking.

Rivan," she said again, softer this time, "why did it stop?"

His jaw tightened. "It didn't stop."

"Then what?" she pressed.

He exhaled. His gaze flicked to the chamber, then back to her. "...It's waiting." That word lingered.

Aarya's brows drew together slightly. "For what?" Rivan didn't respond, so she stepped closer. Not toward the chamber, but this time towards him.

The distance between them closed just enough to make it impossible to ignore.

"For what, Rivan?" she asked again. Quieter and wayyyy more deliberate.

His eyes dropped for a second to her rosy lips....then back up.

...I don't know," he answered without looking at her

"Or you don't want to say?" She slightly brushed his face to fix his gaze on her. He flinched slightly.

Rivan let out a slow breath. "You're reading too much into this."

"Am I?" Her voice wasn't defensive, but It was... curious. Dangerously curious.

"Because from where I'm standing," she continued, "it didn't look random."

His silence gave her more than an answer would have.

Aarya tilted her head slightly. Studying him and then she murmured, "Say it." Rivan didn't move.

"Say what you're thinking." The air tightened between them.

"...It was responding to you," he said finally.  Aarya's gaze didn't break.  "And?"

Rivan's expression hardened slightly. "And you didn't pull away." The words came out quieter than expected. But heavier.

Aarya's breath slowed. "Should I have?" she asked. That question wasn't simple, and somewhere they both knew it...
Rivan stepped closer now, not much, just enough to read her expressions. "Yes," he said. But it didn't sound like certainty, but sounded like something else, something personal.

Aarya noticed. Of course she did.

Her voice dropped slightly."Because it's dangerous..." she said. she pasued ".....or because you didn't like it?"

Silence echoed, rivan didnt answered..and that silence was louder than anything he could have said.

Aarya's expression shifted. Just a little, as something flickered there.

understanding or confusion or something warmer she wasn't able to name.

Behind them, the system pulsed slightly....both of them turned towards it.

inside the chamber, the figure hadn't moved, it felt aware...aware of something it knows...Waiting and wanting...something or someone.

Aarya's voice dropped to almost a whisper, "...It's still watching."

Rivan's gaze darkened slightly. "No," he said quietly. "It's waiting."

Aarya didn't look away."Then maybe we should see," she murmured, "what it's waiting for."

That made Rivan turn to her instantly, "ARYA...."

But she was already stepping forward again.

Back toward the glass. And this time, Rivan didn't stop her.

Because something in him needed to see it too. Needed to know. If it were to happen again.

If it would choose her AGAIN.

And as her fingers lifted toward the surface.....hovering just inches away...the system pulsed. Stronger.

LIKE IT HAD BEEN WAITING, STARVING FOR EXACTLY THAT "HER TOUCH"!

THANK YOU FOR MAKING IT TILL THE END OF THIS CHAPTER 🤍

This is actually one of my longest chapters so far, and I really wanted to build the tension and emotions properly here. I hope you felt it while reading.

Also, sorry if there are any small grammatical errors....or spelling mistakes.

I've got exams going on, but I didn't want to lose this idea before writing it down.

Your support honestly means a lot to me.

If you made it till here, drop a ⚡ in the comments. I'd love to see who's still here and what you're thinking so far 👀

More intensity is coming next...
